Village Cybersecurity Ecosystem Unit (VCSEU): A Digital Shield for Indonesia's Villages!

Jakarta, July 14, 2024 – Amidst the rapid digitalization of villages across Indonesia, the concept of the "Village Cybersecurity Ecosystem Unit" (VCSEU) has emerged as a critical necessity. With over 74,961 villages in Indonesia, of which 27,000 have already undergone digital transformation, the threat of cyberattacks looms large.

Data from the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) reveals a significant increase in cyberattacks in Indonesia, with a total of 1.6 billion attacks recorded in 2023. This is further corroborated by data from the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration, which reported that 32,000 villages were connected to the internet and 27,000 villages had undergone digital transformation by 2022.

Gema Sasmita, CEO of PT Sydeco and a member of the expert council at ITB's Digital Technology Center (DTC), emphasizes the importance of VCSEUs in safeguarding the digital security of villages. "VCSEUs are not just about technology, but also about awareness and preparedness among village communities in the face of cyber threats. This is a proactive step to protect the digital assets of villages and ensure the sustainability of digital transformation," he states.

VCSEUs will serve as the first line of defense in protecting the digital infrastructure of villages, such as internet networks, village applications, and sensitive citizen data. These units will also play a role in providing cybersecurity education and training to village officials and communities, as well as monitoring and responding to cybersecurity incidents.

The VCSEU concept aligns with the government's plan to accelerate the digital transformation of villages. With the establishment of VCSEUs, it is hoped that villages in Indonesia will be better prepared and resilient in facing cybersecurity challenges in the digital age.
